Making Raised Garden Beds Using Natural Materials

In this post I thought I would share with you a few ideas from videos and pictures I found from around the web about how to build raised vegetable garden beds using natural materials such as the soil itself, rocks and logs. This can be a great way to build raised beds if you’re on a budget or just wanting to incorporate a more natural looking design into your property, these designs fit especially well into a permaculture design.

Using assorted logs can be a great way to put up a quick raised bed. Just lay out the logs in the shape you want the bed and use a chainsaw to make it the size you want and fit your corners together. Any logs can be used but hard wood will last longer although it will be harder to cut if you need to.

You might want to lay a few sheets of cardboard down at the bottom of the bed to kill grass and weeds and form a barrier between your lawn and the grow bed.

Fill the bed with a good soil mix of your choice and you’re ready to plant.

Using field stones can also make a great raised bed and depending on where you live they may be in great abundance making this another extremely affordable way to design your raised beds.

You can build a large bed using only stones or you can combine them with other materials for some variety in the garden.

You can also make raised beds using just the soil like in the picture below. This is a great way to make raised beds but it can also be a lot of work digging up and placing the sod. In the end it does however make a beautiful and functionable raised bed.

Here is a great video I found where the homeowners show how they built several raised beds using a variety of materials. I like how they fit these beds into their property with different shapes, utilizing the space they had to work with. Doing it this way may not look great at first but years later when the yard is complete you can have quite the permaculture paradise.
