Homestead Updates

I know I haven’t been sharing much about what’s going on around here lately but that doesn’t mean we haven’t been busy. The garden has been giving us plenty of food, we’ve been eating a lot of lettuce, kale, cucumbers, peppers, radishes and the list goes on and on. We are still waiting for our first red tomato, they’re taking their time this year but there is going to be tons of them when they come in. The berries have been abundant as well, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries and raspberries. The fruit has been a little slow coming except for the mulberries but the apples are coming along nicely. All in all it has been a pretty good year for the garden and orchard so far.

We had an extra unexpected garden this year as well. Last year I built an outdoor colony pen for my rabbits and kept them in there for more than a year. In that time I would occasionally toss them some scraps like sunflower seeds and I remember busting up a couple pumpkins after Halloween last year for them. Anyway it seems as though they did a good job of spreading the seeds because the entire pen is filled with pumpkin vines and six foot sunflowers and it’s all doing extremely well. I guess all that rabbit manure really gave it an extra kick and we will be having a great sunflower seed and pumpkin harvest and I will get to reap what I did not sow.

Rainy Day Chores

Today it’s raining and it’s suppose to keep raining for a couple more days and that’s ok because there are plenty of things I needed to get done inside. So I began with pickling my banana peppers, we’ve had a great harvest of them this year and as much as I enjoy them fresh we just can’t eat them before they go bad so we canned a few jars to enjoy for the next few months. Then we gathered up all the blackberries we have been picking and canned a few jars of jam. I also shredded up my turnips for some turnip hashbrowns. Catch up on a few website things, write a couple articles and it seems like it’s been a pretty productive day.

Leisure Activities

I like to work, to me work is fun but that being said you do have to take a break from time to time and relax. I have the next few days off of work and I’m planning a few leisure activities. It started last night when we hosted another backyard movie night with the family. We had our family plus a few nephews and nieces over to watch a couple movies and we finally packed it in at 1:00 a.m., good times! I also plan on doing a couple day hikes and working in a couple days of fishing this week, A pole, a lawn chair, a shade tree and a good book (I don’t even care if I catch anything).
